Perspective and awarenes on freelancing among students

This study is conducted for B com graduation from Calicut University in M.E.S Asmabi College p.vemballur, Kodungallur, Kerala on the topic of “perspective and awareness on freelancing among college students”. This study is conducted in 30 samples of M.E.S Asmabi college students. The data collection includes primary and secondary data The primary data is collected through a questionnaire by convenient sampling method from the students based on 26 questionnaires. This blog is only a brief explanation of the study.

INTRODUCTION

Freelancing is a self-employed job that does not work under an employer. Freelancers are independent workers who work on the basis of a contract between a firm or an individual. A freelancer is not an employee of a firm and may there be at liberty and flexibility to do different jobs concurrently by various individuals or firms unless contractually committed to working exclusively until a particular project is completed. A freelancer can make their own schedule and have the flexibility to maintain a work and personal life balance.

 The features of freelancing jobs are suitable for students working for part-time jobs and unemployed skilled youth. With the new lifestyles, new technologies, use of the internet, and also after the COVID pandemic the freelancing field is boosting.

The project tries to know the perspective and awareness on freelancing field among college students and also to know the scope of the freelancing field. This study is focused on the college students

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to understand the behavior, opinion, perspective and awareness on freelancing specifically among college students. Also, it tries to know the opportunity and scope of freelancing. The features of freelancing are ideal for part-time work, and new lifestyles and people choosing to be more self-employed and lead more flexible lives have fuelled the trend towards choosing freelancing as a career. The use of the Internet and new technologies is contributing to the growth and facilitation of this field. However, it is unknown what students and young people think about freelancing. This study seeks to know how students think about this field and how much they know about it. It helps to understand the career preferences of students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The field of freelancing is vast and a career option for youth the perspective of students about freelancing and whether they are aware of it is unknown the research has been conducted to understand the perspective and awareness on freelancing among college students and to know the scope of freelancing career fields

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

  • To understand the awareness about the freelancing field among college students 
  • To know the perspective and opinion of students about freelancing as a part-time or a career. 
  • To know the opportunities and scope of the freelancing field.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Freelancing can be an option for college students as a part-time job or career. However, it is unknown what students think about freelancing and their attitude towards it. This study tries to understand the factors affecting student’s career choices and how they shape attitudes toward freelancing. This study was specifically conducted on the students in M. E. S Asmabi College p verbally, by collecting 30 sample responses.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

When it comes to data collection, two methods are used by researchers to collect data. Primary and secondary data. The primary data is collected through a questionnaire by convenient sampling method from the students to analyse the perspective and awareness on freelancing and secondary data has been collected from books and the internet to know the scope, advantages, and disadvantages of freelancing.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

  • It is clear that students are not completely known of freelancing its tools and platforms. It will affect the response of the students. 
  • Only 30 samples are collected as a representation of all, it can’t be said that the result of these samples will represent the whole population

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Freelancing is a rapidly growing mode of employment where individuals provide their services to clients on a project basis. It offers individuals flexibility, autonomy, and the ability to work from anywhere. Self-employment model in which an individual works for themselves, providing services to clients or companies on a project basis. Freelancers are not bound to any particular company or employer and can work on multiple projects at the same time. Freelancers set their rates, determine their work schedules, and choose the projects they want to work on.

 Advancements in technology, and changing work preferences, have made it easier for freelancers to find work, communicate with clients, and receive payment. It is easier for companies to hire freelancers. While freelancing offers many benefits, it also presents several challenges. One of the most significant challenges is the lack of job security and benefits that traditional employees receive. Additionally, freelancers must continually market themselves and find new clients to ensure a steady stream of income. Freelancers are also responsible for managing their finances, including taxes and expenses.

Freelancing: Scope & Fields:

The scope of freelancing is quite broad and can cover a wide range of industries and professions. the freelance economy is constantly evolving and new fields are emerging every day. Some popular fields where freelancers can find work include:

  • Writing and content creation: This includes writing articles, blog posts, social media posts, scripts, technical documents, editing manuscripts, and other writing-related tasks.

Advantages and disadvantages of freelancing:

  • Control: Freelancers can choose the type of work they want to take on and when they want to do it. This control over their workload enables freelancers to prioritize the work that aligns with their skills, interests, and availability.
  • Autonomy: Freelancers are their own bosses, which means they have complete control over the work they do and how they do it. They can set their own goals and deadlines, and make decisions about their business without having to get approval from anyone else.
  • Variety: Freelancers have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects and with different clients, which allows them to build a broad skill set and gain experience across different industries.
  • Income: Freelancers have the potential to earn more than traditional employees, as they can set their own rates and work with multiple clients at once. This also allows for the ability to diversify income streams and not be reliant on one employer.

  • Lack of job security: Freelancers do not have the job security that comes with traditional employment. They may experience gaps in their work or have difficulty finding new clients they are not guaranteed work from any one client. This can make it difficult to plan for the future and may result in periods of unemployment.
  • Lack of benefits: Freelancers do not typically receive benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, or retirement plans. They are responsible for providing these benefits for themselves.
  • Administration and accounting: Freelancers are responsible for managing their own business administration, accounting, and taxes. This can be complicated and time-consuming, especially for those who are not familiar with these tasks.
  • Isolation: Freelancers often work from home or other remote locations, which can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. They may miss the social interaction and sense of community that comes with working in an office.
  • Risk of Burnout: Freelancers may feel pressure to constantly take on new projects and clients to maintain a steady income, which can lead to burnout and a lack of work-life balance
  • Self-discipline: Freelancers need to be self-disciplined and motivated to manage their time effectively and meet deadlines. This can be challenging for those who struggle with selfmotivation or need external structure to stay productive.
  • Self-Marketing: Freelancers are responsible for finding their own clients and marketing their services, which can be time-consuming and require a specific skillset.
  • Finding work: Freelancers must continually find new clients and projects to maintain a steady income. This can be time-consuming and stressful, especially when facing stiff competition from other freelancers.

When it comes to freelancing among students, Freelancing can be a great way for students to earn some extra money while still managing their studies. With the flexibility that freelancing offers, students can work around their class schedules and other commitments to earn an income.Freelancing allows students to work on their own schedule and from anywhere they have an internet connection.it offers a wide range of job opportunities, giving students the chance to work on projects that align with their interests and skills.it can provide students with a steady source of income, which can be especially helpful if they have student loans to pay off or other expenses to cover.
In recent years, there has been an increasing change in the perspective and awareness on freelancing among students. Many students are now considering freelancing as a viable option to earn money while pursuing their studies. And the change in the life style of people lead youth to freelancing. Youth are now more aware of the concept of freelancing. With the internet and social media, they have access to various resources and platforms to learn about freelancing opportunities, industry trends, and best practices. Many freelancing platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com also provide resources and tools for freelancers to succeed.Overall, the perspective and awareness on freelancing among youth have increased in recent years. With the right skills, tools, and mindset, students can leverage freelancing as a viable job option.

FINDINGS ON PERSPECTIVE AND AWARENESS ON FREELANCING AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS

  1. Out of the total respondents a majority 60% were female and the remaining 40% were male respondents
  2. Out of the total respondents 54% of them are in the age category of 17-50, 43% of them are in 21-24, and the remaining 3% are in the category of 25-28.
  3. A majority of 70% of respondents are currently not in any occupation, 23% of them in other occupations, and 3% in business and profession
  4. Most of the respondents(50%) like the profession as their career, 23% of respondents prefer business, who like to be self-employed is 13% and who like other jobs is 13%
  5. Most of the respondents (73%) are aware of freelancing, only 7% of respondents are highly aware of freelancing and 20% of respondents have no idea about freelancing. 
  6. 80% of the total respondents think freelancing is a good option for youth, only 7% of the respondents think it is not a good option and the remaining 13% have no option. 
  7. Out of the total respondents 27% of respondents already worked as a freelancer and the other 73% haven’t worked as a freelancer. 
  8. 70% of the total respondents prefer to become a freelancer and the other 30% do not prefer to become a freelancer. 
  9. Most of the respondents (83%) do not prefer to work under a boss and the other 17% prefer to work under a boss. 
  10. 87% of respondents want job security and the other 13% do not prefer a secure job. 
  11. 87% of the total respondents want a job with employee benefits and 13% do not prefer a job with employee benefits. 
  12. A majority of 97% of respondents like to be their own boss and only 3% of respondents prefer not to be their own boss. 
  13. 60% of the respondents are not aware of freelancing tools and platforms, 37% of respondents are aware of them and only 3% of respondents are highly aware of freelancing tools and platforms. 
  14. Most of the respondents (77%) think freelancing is a good part-time job for students, only 6% of them think it is not a good option and 17% of respondents have no opinion about it. 
  15. 70% of respondents think computer and internet knowledge is important for freelancing, 7% of them do not think of that and 23% of respondents don’t know about it. 
  16. From the total 70% of the respondents think freelancing will bring customers from worldwide, 13% don’t think like that and 17% of respondents have no opinion. 
  17. 60% of the respondents from the total think freelancing will help to maintain a good work-life balance, 13% of them think it will not and 27% of respondents have no opinion. 
  18. 53% of the respondents think freelancing will not bring a stable income, 27% have no opinion and only 20% of them think freelancing will bring a stable income. 
  19. Of the total respondents 70% of them think freelancing will bring more variety in work 20% of them have no opinion about it and only 10% of the respondents think freelancing will not bring more variety in work. 
  20. 57% of the respondents think freelancing will help to set flexibility of time, 17% of them think it will not, and the other 26% have no opinion about it. 
  21. A majority of 77% of the respondents think freelancing is a good platform for utilizing skills, 16% of them have no opinion and only 7% of the respondents think freelancing is not a good platform for utilizing skills. 
  22. 60% of the respondents think youth can choose freelancing as a career 20% of respondents think it is not a good option for youth and 20% have no opinion about it. 
  23. 57% of the respondents think the current lifestyle is driving people to freelancing, 33% of the respondents have no opinion and only 10 of them think the current lifestyle is not driving people to freelancing. 
  24. Out of all respondents 44% of them say the current facilities and conditions are suitable for freelancing, 23% of them say the facilities and conditions are not suitable and 33% of the respondents have no opinion. 
  25. Half of the respondents (53%) say conditions people’s attitudes towards freelancing have changed post covid, 20% of the respondents say it has not changed and 27% of the respondents don’t know about it. 
  26. A majority of respondents(73%) think students should give knowledge about freelancing, 10% say no, and 17% of the respondents have no opinion about it

SUGGESTIONS:

Through this study, I found that most of the students are not completely aware of freelancing its scope, platforms, tools, and its opportunities.

 However, the respondents like to know about its scope and fields. The study of the data suggestions received from the respondents is able to give suggestions to improve the knowledge of students

  • Give proper knowledge about the freelancing field as a job, its scope, opportunities, platforms, and tools.
  • The society should consider freelancing as a job like all other jobs. 
  • There should be a good support system to help the new freelancers. 
  • The freelancing platforms and tools should be easily available for those who want them and they should get proper training and experience on the freelancing tools and platforms. 
  • Freelancing is a good opportunity to utilize the skills but it does not provide stable income and work.

CONCLUSION:

  The study is conducted to know the perspective and awareness on freelancing among college students and their thoughts on freelancing study the scope, and opportunities of freelancing, and also to study the pros and cons. It studies the factors that influence students’ career and their career choice, their attitude towards freelancing.

    From the study it is known that most of the students are not highly aware of freelancing its scope, platforms, and tools Also the attitude toward freelancing has not much changed in society.

      However, most of the respondents want to know about the freelancing fields. They suggested giving proper knowledge and training programs about freelancing.  The students have an open mind towards freelancing. The proper training and knowledge on freelancing opportunities, tools, and platforms can help the students and influence them to know more about freelancing and they can choose freelancing opportunities.
